Time-Lapse Tips and Tools

This Nodal Ninja 6 with Nadir Adapter consists of five main Nodal Ninja components, a horizontal rail, a vertical rail assembly with a tilting stage, an NN6 QR Nadir Adapter that connects the vertical rail assembly to the horizontal rail, a camera mounting plate, and an Advanced Rotator D10 rotary base. Together, they provide the ability to capture a sequence of images for creating single- or multi-row panoramas that are free of stitching artifacts.

The Nodal Ninja 6 with Nadir Adapter is partially assembled and can be ready for use by fastening the vertical rail assembly to the horizontal rail using the Arca-type Nadir adapter. The camera mounting plate then faces sideways, so it can hold a camera and lens above and perpendicular to the horizontal rail that is connected to the Advanced Rotator D10 rotary base. After the Nodal Ninja 6 is attached to a tripod or other support system using the rotary base’s 3/8″-16 accessory threads, a camera and lens can be secured to the camera mounting plate, which features its own locking knob with a 1/4″-20 mount.

The camera mounting plate’s locking knob can be loosened, allowing it as well as an attached camera and lens to be moved along the length of the tilting stage. Similarly, the locking knob for the NN6 QR Nadir Adapter can be loosened, allowing the entire vertical rail assembly to slide along the length of the horizontal rail. Together, these movements enable precise positioning of a camera lens’s entrance pupil above the rotary axis of the Advanced Rotator D10, which incrementally turns the camera during the process of capturing a panorama’s overlapping component images. By aligning the entrance pupil of the lens and the rotary axis within a panoramic photo system, the relative positions of foreground and background objects that appear among sequential images for a panorama remain consistent. Those sequential images can then be joined by seamlessly overlapping those repeating foreground and background objects, allowing lines and elements that extend throughout the finished panorama to appear unbroken and true to life.

When moving the camera mounting plate along the vertical rail assembly, the plate can be precisely positioned using the 0 to 16cm rulers that are engraved along both sides of the tilting stage to maintain visibility. Similarly, an engraved 2 to 17cm ruler on the top surface of the horizontal rail allows the position of the vertical rail assembly to be recorded relative to the Advanced Rotator D10. Specific camera and lens configurations with an entrance pupil correctly located above Advanced Rotator D10’s rotary axis can then be quickly and reliably repeated.

At the side of the vertical rail assembly opposite the tilting stage and its camera mounting plate is a locking knob that can be loosened, allowing the tilting stage to be rotated 360 along increments that are engraved for every 2.5. A camera and lens connected to the camera mounting plate can then be tilted backwards and forwards, enabling multi-row or spherical panoramas that dramatically increase the amount of potential area or detail which can be captured.

Each component included with the Nodal Ninja 6 with Nadir Adapter is constructed using aluminum alloy for durability, while remaining lightweight. The horizontal rail has a built-in bubble level, and screw-in stops are included for both the horizontal rail as well as the vertical rail’s tilting stage.

Use and Handling

    Advanced Rotator D10

    • Can be set to generate audible and tactile clicks at intervals for every 5, 7.5, 10, 15, 18, 30, 36, 45, 60, or 90 per 360 rotation, helping to ensure that images within a sequence sufficiently overlap to form a panorama
    • Lined with clearly labeled detents that allow any of its 10 interval options to be selected and securely locked into place using included detent plungers
    • Compatible with separately available Nodal Ninja F1191 Quick Release Plate for attachment of entire Nodal Ninja 6 Starter Package to an Arca-type clamp

    Horizontal and Vertical Rails

    • Arca-type compatible design
    • 0 to 16cm rulers engraved along both sides of the vertical rail assembly’s tilting stage to maintain visibility for precise positioning of a camera and lens
    • Engraved 2 to 17cm ruler on the top surface of the horizontal rail allows the position of the vertical rail assembly to be recorded; specific camera and lens configurations with an entrance pupil correctly located above a rotary axis of the Advanced Rotator D10 can then be quickly and reliably repeated
    • Vertical rail’s tilting stage can be rotated 360 and locked into place along increments engraved on the vertical arm at every 2.5 for multi-row or spherical panoramas
    • Built-in bubble level on horizontal rail

    Camera Mounting Plate

    • Arca-type compatible design
    • Non-slip pads and adjustable anti-twist lips help prevent unwanted rotation of a camera or lens
    • Standard as well as substitute locking knob to help ensure that a camera with a short lens such as a pancake lens is properly positioned over the rotatory axis when attached to the camera mounting plate
    • Locking knobs can be placed at any one of three points along the plate to help ensure compatibility with most camera and lens combinations

Setup and Testing Done – So Far So Good!

By Jerald Rated 4 out of 5 Date: 2022-07-01

I haven’t had a chance to do a full shoot with this baby, but I had gone through all the steps necessary to assemble it and set it up properly for the 50mm lens I’ll be using most for panorama shoots. So far I like what I see. I’ll re-rate after doing a real panorama.

The 6 in very nicely made. I did put my race Swiss on it because my camera moved some. Outside that, I love how stable it is after you tighten every thing down. This is a good buy and a person would Would buy the 6, they will be happy with it.. J. Payne

      Needs an arca-swiss clamp

By Barney Rated 4 out of 5 Date: 2022-05-09

The machining on this device is excellent and provided reproducible pans that were needed for night sky mosaics. The unit breaks down into two pieces which fit tightly in the supplied soft cases. My reasons for only four stars are that to attach the camera, the L-bracket has to be removed. Also doing a vertarama in a horizontal format is not possible. Having an arca-swiss clamp here instead of the screw in would be my preference. That would allow the camera to attach via an existing L bracket and to shoot both horizontal and vertical formats easily. This is what the Novaflex system has. I believe one can get a arca-swiss clamp that will work from another supplier. I wish the Nodal Ninja team had this option for I would buy it. The supplied clamp does have rear stops so that camera body’s back can be reproducibly placed on the mount once tuned to eliminate parallax. This unit is heavier than the Novaflex but for me, that’s a plus for I shoot with a Nikon’s D850 and Z9 camera bodies.

This made taking taking panoramas so much easier and satisfying. Setup was easier than expected p. The results were perfect.

      Nodal Ninja

By Michel L Rated 4 out of 5 Date: 2022-01-12

The Nodal Ninja is a well built unit and does what it is supposed to do. There are “lots” of spare parts and prices and necessary Allen wrenches to make needed adjustments. Not including even a rudimentary information sheet is the only reason I could not give it a five out of five stars. It certainly has been a journey of discovery. I’m sure it will give me many years of service.

      Great device for pano shots

By Tom Rated 5 out of 5 Date: 2022-12-08

The setup takes a while to figure out, you do have to think it through if you’ve never used a pano adjuster like this. The manuals and online documentation are pretty good, and once you’ve experimented a bit and done it once it’s a breeze to keep using. It’s enabled me to do a lot more with pano photography with a lot less hassle than I had without it.

      Nodal Ninja

By Paul Rated 4 out of 5 Date: 2022-09-12

Nodal Ninja is great but it required me to purchase the Ninja Leveler for it to work a lot easier. Should have been told that at first!!!! Good quality material.
