The Quick-Link Tripod Head Quick Release Set from Arca-Swiss combines a mounting receiver for tripods and an insert disc plate for tripod heads, which together make attaching and detaching a tripod head quick and simple. The Quick-Link disc mounts on the base of any tripod head, and the receiver to the mounting plate mounts on the leg set. Then simply place the head assembly into the receiver and twist the knurled, bayonet-type locking ring to secure it in place. Additional disc mounts are available, so switching heads takes just moments – making working with multiple heads quick and easy. There’s no more need for packing multiple tripods when traveling or working on location. The installed plates can be left permanently in place, so the tripod can be set up and ready to go in just moments.

A Useful Device–I wish I Knew How Strong

I purchased two of these sets to enable me to quickly exchange heads between my Manfroto geared tripod and my Induro high hat. This saves me hundreds of dollars over buying a second Arca-Swiss Cube geared head, while enabling me to have my Manfroto geared head on the other tripod. The components are quite light and lock the heads on as tightly as if they were screwed into place. I would rate this device as five stars, if I knew the amount of weight this set would support in a horizontal position when attached to a gimble head and a heavy camera and super telephoto lens. (My concern is not for when the head is in use, since then the weight would be balanced, but for when a tripod so rigged is placed over ones shoulder for carrying. In that position the entire weight of camera, lens, and head would need to be suspended by the attachment of this system.) Unfortunately, the provided specifications for this quick release set do not address its ability to support weight in that manner. I would hate to lose an expensive combination due to weakness. If I could trust the strength of this combination for such tasks, I could use it to switch among the various heads I own (gimbal, ball, and geared) and my various tripods and monopods to provide me with greater versatility and to enable me carry more potential combinations while saving on bulk and weight when back packing and traveling.

Yes, it’s Arca Swiss. And yes, it costs some dosh. And yes, it is really well thought out and made. You know the equation – cost, quality, design – you get to pick 2. A good tripod is a pretty tough thing – very few moving parts and you can drag it through the brush and trees and aside from a few scratches (the more romantically inclined call them ‘noble scars’), they will work fine – one reason many will strap them to the side of a pack and set off. Tripod heads usually have more moving parts and need to be babied a bit more – you don’t want dust and grime working their way into ball heads. Best to pack the head inside the pack. But it is a nuisance to keep screwing and unscrewing the head onto the tripod. Enter this handy little thing from AS. This makes the ‘getting the head onto the tripod’ thing as easy as getting your camera (if it has a quick release plate) into the head (if it has a space to accept and lock the quick release plate). Essentially the same idea – think of it as putting a plate on the tripod head and a space to accept and lock the plate on the tripod. Except this is made by Arca-Swiss. Everything therefore mates just so and locks positively, no slack, no wobble, no squeek, no screams of photographers getting fingers pinched… Like a good quick release system, it fades from view. Oh yes, it will cost you. But you pick the 2 out of the 3 (cost, quality, design)…
